All are invited to join the Garden Club of Weaverville as we celebrate 50 years since our founding in 1973. The anniversary celebration will take place on Sunday, June 4, 2023, from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m., at the Weaverville Community Center, which is located across the street from Lake Louise in Weaverville.
The event is free to the public, and it affords guests an opportunity to meet club members, learn more about our organization, ask club members any garden-related questions they might have, and enjoy refreshments.
In addition, three speakers will present on gardening topics. The times and descriptions of the presentations are as follows:
2:30 p.m. “50 Blooming Years”
In celebration of 50 years of beautifying the town of Weaverville, club member Susan Dunbar will review the history of the Garden Club of Weaverville from its inception through the present. She’ll also discuss the current activities of the club. These include maintenance of the downtown gardens and the Pollinator Habitat Garden located in the Main Street Nature Park, donations to support worthy horticultural groups in the area, garden consultations for club members, outings to gardening-related places of interest, and monthly informative programs that are open to the public.
3:00 p.m. “My Urban Food Garden”
Club member Kathleen Kasben, who appreciates the joy of working with nature and partaking of its wonderful bounty, will discuss the practical aspects of bringing the vision of her full-sun 1/4-acre vegetable, herb, and berry garden to life over the past nine years. Among the subjects she’ll touch on are building water catchment for water storage and use in her garden, using metal troughs for raised beds and ground-level asparagus and onion patches, and filling those troughs with cover crops for the winter.
3:30 p.m. “My Family Heritage Garden”
Local gardener and artist Joel Cole will discuss how surviving family artifacts and generational influence have inspired him while gardening in Faer Hill, his downtown Weaverville cottage garden. The garden, which surrounds the century-old house that once belonged to his grandparents, became Joel’s after he returned home to Weaverville from New York and bought the property in the 1990s. The garden now comprises an artist studio and several separate rooms, including a potager garden, an Asian garden, and a water garden.

Judy Deutsch has been part of the Rose Garden since its inception in 2018. With 64 rose bushes representing 20 different varieties, she’ll have plenty to show us and talk about. As the Rose Garden leader, she’s surrounded by the flowers she loves because their fragrance can fill a room, the diverse colors are never-ending and they have a long blooming season. Judy will cover how to grow and care for these wonderful plants with a short power point inside the center followed by a tour of the rose garden.“The key to success is to plant roses in full sun and give them the right amount of water,” said Judy looking out across the Rose Garden.
