Meeting September 13 – 9:30 – What Every Gardener Should Know About BioChar

Join us for an inspiring presentation on biochar by Jon Nilsson, soil scientist of 25 years and founder of Char-Grow, where the biochar is produced in the Mills River area. Jon has also worked over 20 years as a compost consultant. Jon will help us understand what biochar is, how to use biochar for long term enhancement of soil health and garden productivity while reducing watering  and sequestering carbon. He will bring samples to pass around and a choice of info-sheets on aspects of this topic.

Tuesday, September 27, 2016 Make and Take – Members Only

Want to express you artistic talent or find out you do have this?

Want to create something uniquely your own to display in your garden? or to give that special person?

Join other members in a hypertufa workshop – the technique of combining cement, perlite, water (and other materials) to form structures that are lighter weight than concrete and easy to shape. Click on links below: hypertufa-005

By taking a workshop with an experienced teacher, you get a “tried and true” hypertufa recipe that works.  If you make it too thin or thick,  or have difficulties with the technique, the teacher is present to guide you through the process.  And, you leave with a finished product.  With the basic technique mastered, you will be ready to try sculptures, nature objects and other garden art, as shown on the Pinterest hypertufa web site. : https://www.pinterest.com/dhypertufa/diy-hypertufa-garden-art/

We have booked this workshop for GCOW members at Thyme in the Garden shop on Weaverville Highway for:

  • Tuesday, September 27, 2016
  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or longer if you choose
  • $25.00 per person
  • Send your check made out to Thyme in the Garden to Charmaine Strong (see your August 9th email for this address)  by August 20, 2016. Those who have already signed up still need to send a check to keep your place.
