Greetings Gardeners,

Our April 10th Meeting will have a different format. We will begin at 9:30 AM and allow one hour to entertain and mull over all your ideas for fundraising since we will not have a rummage sale this year. The major portion of our funds go to scholarships, donations to the Weaverville Nature Park, beautifying the downtown beds and other local projects.

We will car-pool and depart from the Town Hall at 11:00 AM going 20 minutes North on 19/23 to Mountain Meadows Dwarf Conifer Nursery where owner, Michael Balough, will conduct a tour of his amazing Dwarf Conifer selections.

Kathleen Kasben, Co-Secretary
Garden Club of Weaverville

About Mountain Meadows Nursery:
Mountain Meadows Nursery has been operating for 30 years here in WNC. They specialize in unusual evergreens & dwarf conifers such as Hinoki Cypress, Cryptomeria, Spruce, Junipers, Pines, and so on. Their selection is constantly improving and they are now starting to carry a nice variety of dwarf and miniature hostas and perennials.

Their plant collection has come from arboretums, private collectors, and other purveyors of unique plants. They propagate the plants at their nursery and grow them (normally 5-10 years) until the time they are sold.

At our February meeting, the Garden Club of Weaverville hosts a presentation on Container Gardening by Deanne Eversmeyer.

Deanne is a Virginia Tech horticulture graduate who has owned a nursery, developed the landscape department at Washington Golf & Country Club, and she was the horticulture manager at the National Cathedral in Washington DC. She moved to Weaverville in 2013, and now gardens on 7 acres at the east end of the Reems Creek valley. She also works part-time at Rose’s Garden Shop on Charlotte Street in north Asheville.

Members Only Garden Tours Planned for June 13, 2017

On Tuesday, June 13, the members of the Weaverville Garden Club will visit two area gardens.  The first one is a large dry shade garden, and a wonderfully addressed landscaping challenge for anyone who has to deal with mature trees on their property.  The second garden belongs to an experienced gardener and combines edible and native plants on a hilly site.  This event is for our membership only and is one of the benefits of joining our little organization. Space is limited so RSVP to Annick Flaxman as soon as possible

Garden Tour – Members Only – Tuesday, May 9, 2017

On May 9, our members are invited to a very special picnic at the Asheville Botanical Gardens.  We’ll arrive at the Gardens at 10:15 and meet the Gardens’ manager, Jay Kranyik, who will take us on a botanical journey of native discoveries, enlivened by lots of stories and interesting comments.    We’ll then proceed to the meadow and gazebo area where we’ll  have a casual picnic.  There are two picnic tables there, and benches to sit in the gazebo.  Please bring your own salad/sandwich, etc… as well as drinks.  Some cookies or a simple shared dish would also be nice and in the casual spirit of the event.  And come prepared with good walking shoes, as Jay is a fast walker!

If you wish to carpool, we’ll meet at the Weaverville Town Hall parking lot, and leave promptly for our destination at 9:45.
