Why Natives Matter for the Home Gardener

Perhaps you’ve heard the buzz about the benefits and importance of growing native plants in the garden? If you’re interested in learning more, please join us for a presentation by horticulturist and landscape designer Emily Driskill during which she’ll provide background information on native plants and ecology, offer some tips on how to incorporate native plants into the garden, and provide a short list of her favorite species for inspiration. 

Emily earned her bachelor’s degree with concentrations in botany and sustainable agriculture from The Evergreen State College, and she has worked in production horticulture since 2016 when she was hired as nursery manager at Carolina Native Nursery. Then in 2021, in response to the ever-increasing regional need for native plant material for landscape installations, she founded Tanager Plants, a “wholesale to the trade” nursery. She is interested in plant propagation, and she grows as many species as possible from seed in order to promote genetic biodiversity. She also conducts retail sales at a number of local events every spring and fall, including at the Asheville Botanical Garden native plant sales, at the North Carolina Arboretum plant sales, at the Growing in the Mountains Spring Plant Sale, and at the Fall Native Plant Fest in Mars Hill, which is held at her own Tanager Plants location. 

All are welcome to attend. Feel free to bring your own lunch, snack, or beverages to enjoy immediately following the program, if you’d like. The business meeting will begin soon thereafter.
