Chris Davenport, from Reems Creek Nursery, will share his experience and insights regarding how to make your garden a year-round haven for birds.  He will  discuss the types of plants and habitats that will attract beneficial birds to your garden and how to create and maintain a bird-friendly environment.

Before joining Reems Creek Nursery, Chris spent 14 years with Head-Lee Nursery in Seneca, SC; five years with Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA; and two years with the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Chris is an avid home gardener and bird watcher. He loves to travel with his family to view cultivated gardens and explore untrampled wilderness.

October Meeting: Beautiful to Wildlife, Beautiful to People — Landscaping with Native Plants to Support Nature

The Garden Club of Weaverville

October 2023 Meeting

Tuesday, October 10, at 11:30 a.m.

Weaverville Community Center

60 Lakeshore Drive

Albert Weaver Room

Landscaping with native plants is critical to build habitat, build healthy outdoor living areas, and reduce resource inputs. Learn why only native plants can do this, and learn about some design tips to make your native landscape beautiful as well.

Presenter Drew Lathin, owner of Mountain Native Landscape Design, has been playing around with native plants in built landscapes for more than 20 years as a home gardener, native plant nursery manager, owner of a sustainable landscape installation firm, and landscape designer. He is a fierce advocate for the need to re-wild our urban and suburban landscapes using native plants in thoughtful and legible designs to bring biological diversity and beauty to our everyday lives. Four hundred of his clients now have rain gardens, prairie gardens, pollinator gardens, natural shorelines, and alternative lawns.

All are welcome to attend. The garden club will provide refreshments immediately following the program, and the business meeting will begin soon thereafter. Feel free to bring your own beverages.

September Meeting: Bringing the Love of Gardening Indoors with Houseplants (and a plant exchange)

The Garden Club of Weaverville

September 2023 Meeting

Tuesday, September 12, at 11:30 a.m.

(Please note the new time!)

Weaverville Community Center

60 Lakeshore Drive

Albert Weaver Room

*Feel free to bring a snack or lunch to eat during the program and meeting, if you wish.

Carrie Goforth, a local business owner and WNC native, is a lifelong plant enthusiast.  And although she has gardened outside for years, she now chooses to concentrate on gardening inside of her home with a collection of both common and rare houseplant specimens.

Carrie will share tips on ways to collect indoor plants, how to properly care for and fertilize them, how to use them in home décor, and how to propagate to help your indoor garden flourish. The presentation will include live plants for inspiration, a propagation demonstration, and a slideshow with example photos.

All are welcome to attend. A business meeting will immediately follow the program.

What to do to participate in the plant exchange:

  • Start potting up what you want to bring.
  • Be sure to label all plants with the plant name, the sun/shade requirements, and your last name (just in case someone has questions).
  • Leave the plants on the outside patio during the program (and don’t bring them inside the community center room).
  • Get excited about swapping plants with other gardeners during the exchange, which will take place after the program and meeting are concluded.
