November Meeting – Wildwood Herbal Produce Sharing Initiatives

Program: Learn About Wildwood Herbal’s Local Produce Sharing Initiatives

Since, 2020, Wildwood Herbal Farm located in the Reems Creek Valley has supplied area food pantries with over 35,000 lbs. of organic produce, supplied freshly harvested produce to serve over 9,000 side dishes to Meals on Wheels homebound older adults, and in January 2022 entered into a partnership with Council on Aging Asheville Buncombe County supplying 200 CSA boxes of freshly harvested vegetables every week to the 4 senior centers serving older adults living with food insecurity. The farm is run by a multigenerational volunteer workforce. Diane Saccone will explain these local food sharing programs (and volunteer opportunities) at Wildwood Herbal. 

Diane volunteers extensively with and helps guide strategy for Wildwood Herbal. In 2011, she established an experimental winter market to help farmers remain solvent during the winter months. This led to the expansion of a permanent winter market model that was taken over by the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) where it still flourishes today with close to 60 vendors. When not at the Wildwood Herbal farm or teaching yoga, Diane enjoys nurturing her gardens, practicing wildcrafting and traveling with her husband of 40+ years.

October Meeting – Gardening Tips and Plant Exchange

for Our October 2022 Meeting 

Tuesday, October 11th at 10:30 on the covered porch at the new Weaverville Community Center 

Program: Gardening Tips and Plant Exchange

Please bring your gardening wisdom and plants (or a list of plants) you would like to share to this interactive meeting.

  • A brief business meeting will precede the interactive program. 
  • Instead of having a formal presentation this month we will informally share useful gardening tips & techniques. 
    • Annick Flaxman will begin the discussion with some of her fall/winter garden tips.
    • Additional topics will include vole management, invasive plant removal, and spontaneous tip offerings from our peers. Bring visual aids if you’d like. 
  • After the tip exchange, we will focus on sharing the bounty of our gardens and enjoying being physically together again.
    •  Bring plants to share, or a list of the plants that you’d like to share.
      • Each person with plants to share will briefly tell the group about what they have to share.
      • Please label plants if possible. If a cultivar, try to include the name of the variety. (Ex: Echinacea ‘Tomato Soup’)
      • Please don’t share plants on the Western NC Invasive plant list 
      • Please go around the outside of the building to take your plants to the patio.

September Meeting – Tools For Lifelong Gardening

Program: Tools For Lifelong Gardening

Are you sometimes feeling a little creaky? Are some garden chores getting harder?  Come join Alison Arnold and John Bowen for a discussion of garden tools that will help keep you gardening for life. Proper tool choices can help make tasks easier and safer, and there are innovative ways to modify your favorite tools to make them more ergonomic.  They will bring a selection of new and useful tools, and this will truly be a “hands-on” presentation.

Alison Arnold is a NC State Agricultural Extension Agent for Buncombe County. She is responsible for all consumer horticulture topics in Buncombe County including the Buncombe Master Gardener Volunteer program.

John Bowen is a lifelong gardener who is gardening a little slower these days. He’s a Buncombe County Master Gardener Volunteer, an ornamental and vegetable gardener, a plant propagator, and a Weaverville Garden Club member.

A business meeting will follow the interactive program.

June Meeting – Herbs for the Appalachian Garden

Program: Herbs for the Appalachian Garden

 

We live in one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. The climate and soil here allow for a wide variety of herbs that can be grown in our gardens easily. Join Abby Artemisia as she shares 5 of her favorite herbs to grow, included in her book The Herbal Handbook for Homesteaders. You’ll see pictures of each during the slideshow, along with learning a bit about their botany, and more about their medicine and benefits for you, your family, and community.

Botanist, Herbalist, and Professional Forager, Abby Artemisia, was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she spent her free time climbing trees and creek wandering. This is where her love of nature began. Her love of plants had a diverse foundation from apprenticeships on organic farms on the west coast and in the Midwest, to a bachelor’s degree in Botany from Miami University and an apprenticeship in herbalism, along with owning and operating her own tea business. After visiting Pisgah National Forest, she fell in love with the biodiversity of the southeast. Abby then founded the WANDER School, the Wild Artemisia Nature Discovery, Empowerment, and Reconnection School. Through the school, Abby offers the Wildcrafted Herb School Program, customizable workshops, and botanical property surveys. The WANDER School became a nonprofit in 2020 to provide botanical education, herbs, and herbal medicine to underserved communities, and practice Acknowledgement and Reciprocity for Traditional Ecological Knowledge. Abby is also the author of the Herbal Handbook for Homesteaders and The Wild Foraged Life, along with the host of the podcast Wander, Forage, & Wildcraft.
